Like a lot of people, my love of cooking came from my Mum. I spent my childhood in the kitchen, standing on a stool by her side as she cooked. I watched her make pancakes, spaghetti bolognese, Christmas fruitcakes, roast dinners…everything you can imagine. I was mesmerised by how she took command of simple ingredients and turned them into something amazing. Even today, I love to watch her cook. She cooks from cuisines across the globe, and brings her own flair to everything she makes.
When I was in primary school, Mum bought me my first recipe journal, and patiently dictated recipes to me while she cooked. Looking through that book now, I find all sorts of basic recipes for pancakes, scones, waffles, simple tomato pasta sauces, and even our family Christmas pudding recipe, all scribbled in barely legible childish handwriting. Nowadays, we more often share recipes digitally. I tag her in posts on Instagram, she emails me links she’s found. We have an endless list of things we want to cook one day, but amid all the bustle of daily life, we rarely get the chance to cook any of these fantasy recipes.
Last weekend was Mother’s Day in Australia, and unfortunately we didn’t have much of a chance to celebrate because my Mum had the flu (which she’s now passed on to me, thanks Mum!). So we decided to reschedule our Mother-daughter time to this weekend, and planned a special activity: making the Gluten Free Cinnamon Rolls from Our Food Stories.
Mum and I both follow Our Food Stories on Instagram, and we love their moody, rustic photography style. They’re been a big inspiration to me as a food blogger, so it was lovely to have a chance to make one of their recipes!
These Cinnamon Rolls turned out really nicely – the dough was soft, and the filling was nice and sweetly spiced. I added some walnuts to the cinnamon filling for a bit of added crunch, which made them taste a lot like the cinnamon rolls we used to buy when I was a child. With the simple icing drizzled on top, they made a delicious afternoon snack on a chilly autumn day!
